Troy is fabulous
I'd been waiting over a year for this film, ever since early 2003 when I heard it was being made, and wasn't disappointed. The battle scenes are incredible, from Achilles and Hector's magnificent final duel down to such subtleties as blood spatter spraying into the air during climactic battles between the Greek and Trojan armies. The acting is impressive, especially so with Eric Bana, Brian Cox and Peter O'Toole, noble Hector, power-hungry Agamemnon, and the regal King Priam, respectively. Brad Pitt also does well as Achilles. I was really astounded at Achilles' arrogance, which was dead on if you've The Iliad. Taking out the Gods and their petty arguments wasn't a bad thing, especially since this film was a war-epic and not a fantasy film. I mean really, who wants another Clash of the Titans? Troy is an incredible movie, full of action and romance alike. I can't wait until the DVD comes out.
Very Good - But Not Gladiator.
From the start, I think most of us knew that this was never going to be as great as 2000's epic, Gladiator, for two reasons - one, an epic like this had already been done (taking away its Hollywood originality) and two, its leading star, Brad Pitt, was never going to be good enough to give an Oscar winning performance. Although saying that, he portrayed the posing Achilles well, along with other good cast members such as Brendan Gleeson as Menelaus, Brian Cox playing the powerful Agamemnon and Eric Bana playing the well respected warrior and Prince, Hector.
With some tremendous battle scenes, entertaining sword fights and magnificent scenery (filmed in Malta), Troy does not fail to please the viewer. Based on Homer's historic poem 'The Iliad', this film follows many in their pursuits of victory, revenge, love and peace in a time of war. Perhaps not the most gripping or moving of films, you do at least have some care for the characters, yet I strongly believe with perhaps a stronger cast for certain roles, and a better script, Troy could have been one of the all time greats.
Yet despite this - Troy is a must see.
Saw it 3 times in one day
At first I didn't want to see this movie because I thought it would be boring, and stupid, not to mention it had Brad Pitt. But then my best friend, who has never guided me wrong on movies, told me how great it was, and said I should cheack it out. I was a little hesitent at first because again I wasn't sure if I should waist my dollars on it or not. I took a chance and saw it.
IT WAS AMASING!
I couldn't believe I was going to miss out on this amazingly made movie. It's got something for everything. Semi-nude Brad Pitt, Eric Bana, along with Orlando Bloom. Not to mention a few love storys for us sencitive people, and some major butt kicking for us action people. The battel scenes though long, where amazing and well done. The fight between Achilles (Pitt) and Hector (Bana), was amazing. The first time I saw it, I was at the eage of my seat, at a loss for breath. Completely taken in by every move they made. Though me being the Greek Geek that I am knew who was going to die, but I was still amazed.
The only problem I found was I was too attached to the characters, which is a good thing, and when they died I wanted to cry. (I think I did when Hector and Achilles died), but I my heart went out to Hector's wife, and Achille's lover. That normally doesn't happen to me.
All I'm saying is it's got something for everyone, some love, and some blood.
