| DVD Description Comprehensive but user-friendly, reasonably challenging but accessible to a variety of levels, Yoga Shakti is inarguably one of the best yoga products on the market--no small achievement when one considers just how many of them there are. Instructor-creator Shiva Rea, a California-based yogi of considerable international renown, specializes in vinyasa yoga (a vinyasa is essentially a series of flowing, connected poses, incorporating breath and movement and cultivating heat, strength, flexibility, and balance). Four complete practices are presented, ranging in length from 42 to 85 minutes and including Basic Flow (for beginners), two more vigorous Solar Flow sequences, and a Lunar Flow sequence falling somewhere in the middle in terms of degree of difficulty; familiar poses like sun salutations, forward bends, lunges, twists, and inversions are featured, although Rea adds many of her own touches (such as the four "dancing warrior" sections, sun salutation variations designed for intermediate users and focusing on hips, backbends, and so on), and there are also sections devoted to pranayama (breathing exercises) and meditation. It's all good, but the principal innovation of Yoga Shakti is the "yoga matrix," which allows users to customize and program their own workouts, drawing on portions of any or all of the four sequences to create series of various lengths and levels of intricacy (some guidelines are suggested for the less experienced) and thus keep their practices fresh and evolving. One can also do the various workouts with or without the instruction audio track on (the Indian-New Age-flavored music is quite good, and usually unobtrusive), and there's even an entire second disc, containing interviews, additional instruction, travel footage (filming took place primarily in India and the Maldive Islands), and more. All in all, Yoga Shakti is most impressive. --Sam Graham |

Excellent for Do-It-Yourselfers If you are the kind of person who prefers to learn new things in the privacy of your own livingroom, then this is a wonderful DVD product. It teaches you and demonstrates all the moves very clearly and in a soothing, entertaining, most pleasant manner. I would recommend it for beginners and advanced beginners who are looking to get special instructions. It might also be good for more advanced yoga students looking for a change of pace from their regular yoga practice or who want to try a dvd practice.
This DVD brings to mind several others you can get here on amazon which might be of interest, including "AM-PM Yoga", the sensuous "GODDESS WORSHIP" as well as the very direct and fun "NEW SEX NOW", all of which teach their material in an excellent and unique fashion.
Highly Recommended I've been a Yoga enthusiast for about 10 years now and this is definately the best DVD/Video out there. I've practiced several types of yoga: Ashtanga, Bikram, & Jivamukti in a studio environment; and have tried many DVDs: Rodney Yee, Bryan Kest's Power Series & Baron Baptiste, none of which compare to this. I read a review in Yoga Journal & immediately purchased it. The yoga matrix is fantastic! By letting you create your own practice it eliminates the boredom that often occurs with video instruction. I also love the fact that she includes breathing and meditation exercises which are very integral parts of yoga and are often left out of other videos. Although some knowledge of yoga is needed, it's great for the beginner as well as the very advanced. I highly recommend it!
Nonpareil Well ok, hundreds have already reviewed this DVD but I feel like I owe it to Shiva and Daphne to add my own thoughts. I have been utilizing at home DVDs and CD's for my workouts for a number of years now and the biggest drawback to them is that after several months, the routine starts to get boring. Am I right everyone? Yes, well. So, I would maintain that the best feature of this workout DVD is the matrix. This way if I want to mix Dancing Warrior with Lunar Flow, followed by OM 1 and 2, I can any time I want I can do so. Then, the next day, I can reverse the process or totally mix them up again. The only precaution that I would offer is to make sure you have warmed up with the Sun Salutations or the Dancing Warrior sequences before trying the more advanced backbends such as Urdvha Dahnurasana and Viparita Dandasana. Of course the great music and the beautiful beach scenes are just icing on the cake. And, I cannot help but notice all the bidding wars on Ebay over the clothing line that Shiva wears on this DVD. The pants alone have sold for over $70.00!
Once again Shiva and the Yoga Posse; you have outdone yourselves! |
