DVD Description

You won't need a bottle of rum to enjoy Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl, especially if you've experienced the Disneyland theme-park ride that inspired it. There's a galleon's worth of fun in watching Johnny Depp's androgynous performance as Captain Jack Sparrow, a roguish pirate who could pass for the illegitimate spawn of rockers Keith Richards and Chrissie Hynde. Depp gets all the good lines and steals the show, recruiting Orlando Bloom (a blacksmith and expert swordsman) and Keira Knightley (a lovely governor's daughter) on an adventurous quest to recapture the notorious Black Pearl, a ghost ship commandeered by Jack's nemesis Capt. Barbossa (Geoffrey Rush), a mutineer desperate to reverse the curse that left him and his (literally) skeleton crew in a state of eternal, undead damnation. Director Gore Verbinski (The Ring) repeats the redundant mayhem that marred his debut film Mouse Hunt, but with the writers of Shrek he's made Pirates into a special-effects thrill-ride that plays like a Halloween party on the open seas. Aye, matey, we've come a long way since Jason and the Argonauts! --Jeff Shannon

Yo ho ho and a bottle of rum!

Who says they do not make swash buckling movies any more? Johnny Depp is a somewhat less dashing and romantic figure than Errol Flynn, but he plays a pirate with a wonderful flair for style, humor and a touch of drama. Orlando Bloom as Will Turner takes the romantic lead, primarily with beautiful Keira Knightley as Elizabeth Swann, the daughter of Governor Weatherby Swann (Jonathan Pryce).

We are quickly introduced to Captain Jack Sparrow, a notorious pirate. We also quickly learn that Captain Jack must be one of the luckiest men alive as he escapes from one catastrophe after another. We soon encounter Will Turner and learn that he has been making swords and practicing with them for three hours a day. Of course, we saw him in the "Lord of the Rings" trilogy, and we can attest to his apparent excellence with blades of steel. We also meet Elizabeth Swann early in this movie, and what a beautiful woman she is, perfect for being a central character from the beginning of this movie to the end.

The last central character we meet is the pirate Barbossa (Geoffrey Rush). We soon learn that Barbossa and the crew of the pirate ship Black Pearl have been cursed; a curse which can only be broken by gathering together of a chest of gold and spilling the blood of a certain person. Since the time of the curse Barbossa has been seeking a single piece of gold and a relative of a man named Turner.

The action continues briskly from the beginning to the end, with the often bumbling pirates seeming to keep the upper hand from the beginning to nearly the end of the movie. Of course, once we learn that the pirates are dead we understand better that they can not be defeated. I leave the end for the viewer to discover.

This movie is based loosely on the Disney ride. There are scenes in the movie that are based on scenes from the ride. Those scenes tend to be some of the funnier scenes. However, other than being inspired by the ride and having a few scenes based on the ride, the movie departs quite far from the ride itself, and the departure is all to the good.

There have been a few attempts at making swashbuckler movies in the last several decades. A few have done reasonably well. However, this movie is a nice throwback to the eras of Errol Flynn and Burt Lancaster. There are quite a number of nice stunts, and the ships are beautiful. The movie contains a number of moderately scary moments, and the violence is pervasive, so the PG-13 rating is justified, and should probably cause parents to consider what age should be permitted to watch this movie. However, for fans of action movies and pirate swashbucklers in general, this one is a winner.

Pirates of the Caibbean.

Pirates of the caribbean is a film sutible for any age group it is an action filled film starring Johnny Depp ( secret window, blow, Edward sissor hands), Orlando bloom, geoffery Rush, Keira Knightly etc.. This film has laughs, jokes, fights every thing a kids like us likes.
The special effects are amazing and i can garenteed that whoever watches this film will be satisfied.!!!!!!

A must-see film

Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl is a film of dynamic actors, special effects, and storyline. Such films are rare and should be appreciated with proper respect, and from the films popularity, I suspect as much if not more.

ACTORS: An incredible actor, Orlando Bloom, and an impressive actress, Kera Knightley, played the protaganists in this film. Such roles are not always easily played on screen, but they not only took the job and met expectations, they surpassed them. Geoffrey Rush played the evil antagonist, a zombie pirate captain who wants revenge. His job with his character is undeniably real. Johnny Depp played the role of someone in the middle, and he added a bit of amusement to the silver screen.

SPECIAL EFFECTS: A film that needs 150 zombie pirates on a ghost ship in the middle of the ocean needs a touch-up with the computer. With the blink of an eye, regular actors become blood-thirsty zombies. A spectacular feat.

STORYLINE: What can I say? A lot more than could fit in a simple review. With a highly creative and talented script team we get characters that have emotions weaved with others. We also get a plot that has such a simplicity to it without boring us into a deep sleep. The character Johnny Depp plays, a pirate at the end of his luck, is amusing, good, evil, and slightly over-the-top all at the same time, and is one of the main greats of the film. This plot shows amazing talant with the director, script-writer, and an all-star cast who have a certain type of chemistry with each other that can only show a legendary film in the end result.

Purely a joy to watch, Pirates of the Carribean: The Curse of the Black Pearl is a must-see film. If not seen, it is better to watch it now rather than later, since it's a classic of its own time. Ten out of five stars.
