People Will Say I'm In Love!!!
OH MY GOSH!!! I absulutely fell in love with "OKLAHOMA!"
I watch it all the time, and every time Gordon MacRae or
Shirley Jones start singin' I burst out tears!
To start with it though, it has the wonderful songs,
"OH WHAT A BEAUTIFUL MORNIN', THE SURREY WITH THE
FRINDGE ON TOP, KANSAS CITY, I CAIN'T SAY NO, MANY
A NEW DAY, PEOPLE WILL SAY WE'RE IN LOVE, PORE
JUD IS DAID, OUT OF MY DREAMS, THE FARMER AND
THE COWMAN, ALL ER NUTHIN' and OKLAHOMA" (Just to name
all of them, hahahaha!)
But they realy are all great songs!
It's "a joyous celebration of frontier life sweeps
across the Western plains, drivin by an immortal
score filled with unforgettable songs.
Set in Oklahoma Territory in the early 1900s, "Oklahoma!"
has the wonderful Gordon MacRae as Curly, a sunny,
good-natured ranch hand. Shirley Jones is
Laurey Williams, the farmer's daughter he loves.
Rod Steiger is the menacing Jud, who tries to come
between them.
OKLAHOMA! also has stars, Gloria Grahame, Gene Nelson,
Charolette Greenwood, Eddie Albert and James Whitmore.
(Approx 145 minutes, Color, Rated G.)
This was the first Rodgers and Hammerstein collaboration, starting the most successful creative partnership in the
history of musical theater. And my favorite! And I hope you watch it!
The main protagonists are disappointing
For me there are many better musicals than this. The main reason Oklahoma falls short is that the principal characters are phenomenally irritating. From the start it is clear that Curly and Laurie are going to get together and it is only Laurie's rediculous procrastinating and idiotic decision to go to the dance with the sinister, thuggish farm hand Jed that leads them into trouble in the first place. And Laurie's schmaltzy, sentimental hallucinatory dream sequence is one of the worst scenes of film history. The sub plot is better - Ado Annie is superb as the 'Girl that can't say no' as she swings between her stalwart suitor Will and a louche Persian salesman Ali Hakim. But generally the plot and themes are not a patch on the Sound of Music.
Doesn't Stand Up With the Rest of Musicals
I am a BIG fan of musicals. My favorite kind of movie is a musical from "Easter Parade" to "My Fair Lady" but I could not stand "Oklahoma!". I found it very boring with really nothing to uphold the plot. It's only worth viewing if you count some of the songs and dances. What got me the most was the plot. It was so annoying how they went back in forth. I was like just go out with him to the stupid dance!!! The other actress was equally annoying...(the one who wanted to marry the salesman) But, that's just my opinion.
