VHS Tape Description

Paula Abdul's fans will really have fun with this 45-minute, high-energy dance workout. Even the warm-up is energetic and jazzy. Abdul teaches two dance routines. She introduces a 16-count pattern slowed down, then speeds it up until you're up to tempo, adding on until you've got a routine. Don't expect teaching expertise from Abdul--she cues the moves, but never explains how to do what she's demonstrating. Just watch and follow. You may need to pause this video a lot at first to learn the moves--she doesn't repeat the slowed-down moves enough to catch them--but after you get them, it becomes pure fun. She is assisted by two of her tour dancers and a crowded class of what she calls "ordinary people," though they're mostly young, good-looking, and very fit. The production is colorful and flashy. The constantly changing camera angles are distracting and sometimes annoying, because they hinder you from watching the feet to learn the moves. You'll enjoy the playful cool-down to Village People's "YMCA," led by the males in the class. An abdominal segment and stretches finish the workout. Coordination and rhythm required. --Joan Price

Very Fun but be careful.

This is a wonderfully fun workout, however if you have bad knees or a bad back be very careful. It's a very vigorous, hip-hop dance workout. The dance moves are complex at times but she does take the time to teach you the moves with slow music before you really get going. If you have two-left feet you may end up on the floor when the music picks up. There are several combinations that you learn. These combinations are put together at the end to form a very fun dance routine.

Great fun, but complex

I had no problem with the warm up, but the real dance steps didn't enough explaination. She does slow down the music & steps to 3/4 speed for 3 repetitions, not even 1/2 speed, but that's not enough for me. She would just quickly call out "swish right, left step, right step up & around" & that's the only instructionin almost normal speed. She teaches popular steps from the 90s like the Goerge Jetson, etc.

It looks & is great fun with all the people even when she asks the next move & they yell "left running step". But a bit fustrating when you're just watching & trying to keep up. It's almost best for people who can record a move on a movie/tv show & watch it a couple times & have it down pat.

So fun!

I started doing this video with my college roommates, and it's lots of fun. Once you've done it a few times you'll have the moves done and then you'll be able to get more out of the workout (it's not a much work when you're stopping to figure out what you're doing wrong...). The YMCA part towards the end is stupid, but it keeps your heart rate up a little longer. Also, as part of the cool down there is a decent ab workout section.
Everyone I've done this with agrees that someone should bust out these moves when trying out for American Idol, just to see the look on Paula's face!
