VHS Tape Description

Gene Wilder takes his most unusual role, a naive 19th-century rabbi sent from his native Poland to the fledgling Jewish community in San Francisco, in this warm-hearted comic adventure. The trusting soul is easy prey for the con men and criminals who prey on the immigrants arriving in the Philadelphia port and the rabbi, beaten but unbowed, continues his trek West solo: broke, underequipped, and hopelessly lost. Harrison Ford, fresh from Star Wars, is the roguish outlaw who adopts the determined traveler and the two become unlikely friends as they make their way through one scrape after another. Wilder makes a sincere and sympathetic hero, his faith and courage seeing him through one crisis after another, and fresh-faced Ford makes an endearing scamp of a bank robber. The meandering adventure, overlong at two hours, takes its time as the duo traverses the gorgeous American countryside and end up in the bustling Barbary Coast San Francisco of the Gold Rush era. Legendary hard-edged action director Robert Aldrich (Kiss Me Deadly, The Dirty Dozen) brings a gentle touch and easygoing humor to this family-oriented adventure, but old habits die hard. While staying within PG parameters, Aldrich adds a little grit to the Old West fistfights and gunfights. --Sean Axmaker

Reviews from Customers

Wilder at his best.

I love this movie! Gene Wilder is true to the character and Harrison Ford puts in an amazing performance. The chemistry between the two actors is wonderful, and the story rings true.
I wish the studio would release it on DVD, since my copy on VHS is just about worn out! I still laugh out loud every time I see this movie. The writers were pure genius.

Hilarious!

Gene Wilder and Harrison Ford have priceless chemistry. It's a great story for helping people understand Jewish people better, as well as early American culture. I can't believe it's not on DVD yet!

The Frisco Kid

I believe The Frisco Kid is one of the classics of the western-comedy genre. Gene Wilder is excellent in playing a 19th centurty East European rabbi. He captures the old East European Jewishness ("Yiddish-Kite" sic)very well and is also his usual very funny self. Harrison Ford is perfectly cast as the classic handsome gentile and devilish but good guy gunslinger in one of his early roles. The trials and tribulations of the bumbling rabbi's, and then as joined by the gunslinger, classic quest and adventure from Eastern Europe to San Franciso are at the same time hilarious and fun and a deeply moving example of the conquest of honest faith and belief over adversity. I thought this would be a great movie for my twin boys to see before their Bar Mitzvah and am surprised that it is not available in DVD. Perhaps, being Jewish and everybody I have ever mentioned it to knowing this movie, I believed there would be a greater interest in this movie for publication in DVD format generally than maybe there actually is. However, one would think that a classic Harrison Ford movie such as would have tremendous interest, given he is one of the all-time box office kings, not to mention the ever-increasing respect Gene Wilder is gaining for his career.
