| VHS Tape Description Ted Neeley makes for a wimpy looking Jesus in Norman Jewison's screen adaptation of the Andrew Lloyd Webber-Tim Rice "rock opera," which was a smash on stage in the early '70s. Jewison (Other People's Money) adds some good exterior settings in the desert, but Lloyd Webber and Rice's dialogue-free story (everything is sung, as in a real opera), with its quasi-profundities about the inner demons of principal figures in the life of Christ, is the real hook. Yvonne Elliman sings the show's best-known song, "I Don't Know How to Love Him." --Tom Keogh |

Jesus Christ Superstar Special Edition AND THEN SOME... It's absolutely fabulous. Please note buyers that if you want closed captioned and you don't see it listed in the description, not to fear because it does have closed captioned in English. It has everything the regular edition has plus a few more extras. I was really impressed with the quality of the picture as well as the sound. Also, because it's a widescreen version as well when you choose to use the closed captioning it doesn't get in the way of the picture which is a nice advantage. I believe you'll love it. You can't beat the wonderful price either.
Ted shines... This is definately a film that will capture you, or leave you high and dry. Fortunately, I am one of those who was captured. When I found out it was entirely from the Gospel of St. Matthew, I looked it up in the Bible and lo and behold...there it was. After my Catholic education, it took this film to trigger my religious curiousity. And that may be what I mean...to see Jesus as a real man with emotions and not some spaced out actor. To see his followers as young handsome people and not just robed followers. You're either ready to experience that realization or you don't. I was lucky enough to see Ted Neeley perform JCS on stage a few years back...the ending was not to be believed. In my opinion, he owns the role of Jesus Christ Superstar.
Dissapointed... I was shocked when I saw this film.. I found out recently that there was a film made for Jesus Christ Superstar that was made a while ago.. and being a huge Andrew Lloyd Weber fan I decided to see if this was any good.. and to my surprise it wasn't good. I basically fast forwarded through most of it.. I lost interest very quickly.. I thought it was very boring.. ALthough I love the work of Andrew Lloyd Weber .. This movie just slapped him in the face.. it was horribly made.. the scenes didn't match up.. there was hardly a story line to follow.. the story was harder to follow than Weber's musical Cats which basically had no storyline but was a lot more interesting than this butchered musical.. The vocals were quite impressive though.. And I did enjoy the rock/roll songs very much.. but there were hardly any to enjoy... This has got to be a huge dissapointment to all his fans |
