It didn’t have the kind of raving fandom that movies like Raiders of the Lost Ark did, but there were plenty of young artistic people who really dug the premise of Fame: gifted high school students at an amazing performing arts school in New York strive to achieve fame the old fashioned way: by being talented. Based on a real school in New York, the 1980 cast of Fame was ahead of its time. Where most films had all white casts, with the occasional token African American, Fame had young adults of a wider range of skin tones. And one of the best things about Fame was that these weren’t coddled prep school kids whose mum or dad could use connections or cash to smooth the path. They were like a lot of the large state college students of the early 1980s: scraping together just enough to stay in school.
