Fame Movie Review
The movie Fame was originally released in 1980 and developed a cult following. It didn’t have the kind of raving fandom that movies like Raiders of the Lost Ark did, but there were plenty of young artistic people who really dug the premise of Fame: gifted high school students at an amazing performing arts school in New York strive to achieve fame the old fashioned way: by being talented. Based on a real school in New York, the 1980 cast of Fame was ahead of its time. Where most films had all white casts, with the occasional token African American, Fame had young adults of a wider range of skin tones. And one of the best things about Fame was that these weren’t coddled prep school kids whose mum or dad could use connections or cash to smooth the path. They were like a lot of the large state college students of the early 1980s: scraping together just enough to stay in school.
The 2009 remake of Fame has an ensemble cast that stars Naturi Naughton as Denise, Kay Panabaker as Jenny, Anna Maria Perez de Tagle as Joy, Kelsey Grammer as Joel Cranston, Megan Mullally as Fran Rowan, Bebe Neuwirth as Lynn Kraft, Charles S. Dutton as Alvin Dowd, Kherington Payne as Alice, Debbie Allen (who was in the original 1980 flick) as Principal Simms, Walter Perez as Victor Taveras, Paul McGill as Kevin, Paul Iacono as Neil Baczynsky, Asher Book as Marko, and Collins Pennie as Malik.
The movie depicts four years in the life of the students at the New York High School for the Performing arts, which still exists under the name Fiorello H. Laguardia H.S. They’re all gifted, all determined, and all very competitive, knowing that their chances to achieve fame aren’t that great. Are there cliches? Of course. But if you watched the original version of Fame from 1980, it’s worth renting or downloading before seeing the new movie, for comparison purposes.
The kids in the new movie seem a lot more … sophisticated? Street smart? It’s hard to describe, but it is obvious that the young adults who star in this movie are much like their characters: determined, competitive, and artistically gifted.
