Director : Shane Acker
Stars : Elijah Wood, Jennifer Connelly, Crispin Glover

To watch the movie 9 online, you need a huge monitor. This movie, that is directed by Shane Acker, and produced by Tim Burton, is a total treat for the eyes. The visuals are such an integral part of the film that critics are claiming it would work fine silent. This is said as a positive statement about the highly detailed images that are shown through the film’s images as related through the characters, and also, a bit of a negative statement aimed at the stale dialogue that takes place in the movie. Since this movie was based on Acker’s thesis project while he was in grad school, which was an 11 minute silent film, then this description is actually appropriate. You can also watch the short film online. However, it’s not silent like older films are. It does have a soundtrack.
It is well worth the time it takes to watch 9 online? You should. To greater appreciate the outstanding visuals from this movie, watch it with the sound turned off. If you feel like you’re losing the story, you can always turn the sound back. The artwork was one of a kind, but there was something about the main character 9, that seemed off, but I couldn’t pinpoint it, as he went through his character movements. He had gigantic round eyes and certain motions that reminded me of Mr. Bill, and a large zipper down his front and was very bottom heavy, which made me think of Ronald McDonald. However, I quickly forgot all about it. There’s nothing ripped off about 9 as a character.
More than likely, you will first notice that it is much like a Tim Burton Movie. Since Tim Burton produces the movie, then sure he will have a great influence on some of the visual parts of the movie, but if you watch Acker’s first short film, you will realize that you can see Acker’s style come through in different ways than The Nightmare before Christmas, and the Corpse Bride.
The film takes place on Earth after mankind has obliterated itself, and the landscape is nothing but charred buildings and smoke; however, there are some distinct differences between Acker’s and Burton’s styles. 9′s distinct visual world is well thought out by the architecture-based mind of Acker, so that world is an imporant element. He wanted to find out what happened when you destroyed the entirety of human existence and showed what happened to these strange creatures left behind. In this way, the world of 9 is a very unique and innovative look at humanity. Also, many people have said online, that they should make a 9 video game. I wonder…

The movie 9 is an animated science fiction movie directed by Shane Ackler that is scheduled to open September 9. Get it? The movie 9 opens on 09/09? The character 9 is a so-called “stitchpunk” who comes to life in a post-apocalyptic world and chances upon a small group of other stitchpunks who are hiding from evil machines who are determined to get rid of all of them.
Here are some things to know when you watch 9 online. In numerical order, the stitchpunks are:
1. (Christopher Plummer) The oldest and unofficial leader of the group. He’s clever and “street smart,” but is quick tempered and irritable and is very slow to trust 9.
2. (Martin Landau) A kindly inventor who loves making inventions from garbage. He’s rather old and rickety and has to use a cane.
3. (No voice) Curious but very shy stitchpunks who cannot speak and instead uses film projector eyes to communicate with others. Very skittish and bookish.
4. (No voice) The twin of 3.
5. (John C. Reilly) A skillful mechanic, hard worker, and a shy spirit, but a very devoted friend. He only has one eye and wears a metal plate over the other one.

6. (Crispin Glover) The most artistic and free spirited stitchpunk. His fingers are actually pen nibs which he draws with. He is able to draw his prophetic visions of the past and the future to help solve mysteries.
7. (Jennifer Connelly) She is a brave loner who is willing to take risks, but can be reckless and stubborn. She fights with a blade on a long stick and wears a helmet made of a bird skull.
8. (Fred Tatasciore) He’s a big brute and 1′s body guard. He’s strong and fierce, but not terribly bright.
9. (Elijah Wood) He’s the main character of the movie and has all the good protagonist attributes: sincere, willing to risk his life for others, searching constantly for truth. 9 believes that the stitchpunks should no longer hide, but should find out why the machines want to destroy them.
The machine enemies of numbers 1 through 9 include the evil Fabrication Machine which was driven to destroy humanity after being pushed too hard by its human overlords. The Cat Beast, a somewhat feral creature, is the first machine 9 encounters, made of a cat skeleton retrofitted with mechanical parts. The Winged Beast swoops down like a bird of prey to catch its victims and its head and mouth are made of sharp things like knives and other sharp implements. The Seamstress draws its prey out with its sweet doll’s face that covers its real face, then ensnares it in red thread it carries around on its back. When you watch 9 online, you’ll have a better experience if you have a large monitor.
Done in CGI, everyone seems to attach Tim Burton’s name to it, though he is only credited as the producer. But it does have a dark stylized look when you watch 9 online, like other “Tim Burton” films.

Everyone ought to watch 9 trailer online. Verbal descriptions can’t really do justice to the style of the film. It’s done in CGI, and “9″ is the name of the main character in the film, a sort of brought-to-life ragdoll who finds a group of others like him only to learn that they are hiding out from evil machines that are trying to hunt them down and destroy them.
You can watch 9 trailer online at several places, including IMDB. It depicts a gritty post-apocalyptic world devoid of human life. 9 and his cohorts (who are numbered 1 through
are all of a similar design. They sort of look like C3PO would look if he was made of burlap. You’ll be able to tell from the trailer whether or not your under-13 child will find the movie too frightening. In fact, if your child has heard about the movie and hasn’t seen the trailer, you should watch it together so he or she can determine if it’s going to be too intense.
9 Movie Review (2009)
Shane Acker’s new film 9 (not to be confused with the upcoming new Musical of the same name written out as Nine) may be destined to be one of the years most creative and imaginative movies. 9 was based on an 11-minute silent short that was the director’s thesis project during his grad school days in UCLA’s animation department.
However unlike most film school graduates it appears that Mr. Acker has actually taken some time to watch some of the truly creative films that have been been coming out for years, mostly from foreign countries. This film appears to be an exercise in style which makes sense given one of its producers is Tim Burton.
The style on display here isn’t the usual cold perfection of a film like Burton’s Corpse Bride. It actually looks somewhat like some of the obscure eastern European films of Jan Svankmajer. However, unlike his films(which are often classic loose adaptations of timeless literature), 9 is in the end a film by someone whose life was spent watching films. Like most young Hollywood directors Mr. Acker is hellbent on dazzling our eye with complex, eerie and beautiful images. Unfortunately (and one certainly can’t blame him) this is not an arena which expects any substance to go along with the pretty pictures.
Citing the aforementioned Svankmajer and the amazing Hayao Miyazaki as major influences, this director shows us a correlating ingenious knack for wowing the audience with memorably strange looking characters and technically original set designs. It’s just that when the film is over one is left feeling admiration for all the work done without ever finding out why anyone would spend so much time doing something like that.
On the other hand, Myazaki’s (Whose Masterpiece Ponyo is currently playing) themes are rich and profound, and the audience actually leaves the theater with a new sense of the power of the movie as a form of art. You’ll leave 9 being enthralled, no doubt, but you’re more likely to leave in the thrall of the amazing artwork and technology rather than the movie as a whole.
