It could have been it.

Michael Jackson’s This Is It is a look behind the scenes as the King of Pop prepared for his farewell concert tour. It features MJ rehearsing the hits that were to be a part of the grand concert’s set list, such as “Thriller,” “Black or White,” and “Smooth Criminal.”

We glimpsed the preparation for monumental, special-effects and an ambitious stage show—such as a robot covered with videos that Michael was going to emerge from, a giant spider for “Thriller,” and 3-D effects.

Parts of the concert were going to be larger than life, with imagery of soldiers marching to infinity, and a giant bulldozer emerging on the stage. The vision for the concert was grand, and the planned dancing and choreography were superb. Though his health was compromised, you could still hear the power of his smooth, high voice, especially in a rendition of the hit “I Just Can’t Stop Loving You.”

As a master of his craft, Jackson knew exactly what he wanted. His process and work ethic are on display as he corrected minor parts of the sound, the dance, or the cue. After one take he quips to the camera, “that’s why this is rehearsal.”

This intimate look provides a chance to see what Michael Jackson was like as a person, as opposed to his music videos, concerts, or tabloid headlines. His humility and reverence for God come through strongly.

During the film he’d often mention doing this for God or for Love. This was evidenced in his communication style and interactions. In one scene he is shown giving feedback to a crew member. He gently explains, “I know you mean well, but this is difficult,” when asking to have his earpiece adjusted.

Considering all the marketing hype, the film itself isn’t as high-energy as the trailer makes it out to be. Maybe that’s to be expected considering it was just rehearsal footage, and not a polished music video or a finished work. The lack of energy is almost certainly related to Michael’s medical condition at the time. Looking at the frail Jackson, I felt a bit queasy. It was like seeing a ghost, and not simply because we know his unfortunate fate to come, but because he was livid.

The movie was at times poignant, such as when the dancers, with tears in their eyes, describe their feelings about auditioning. It was a dream come true for them.

Through the film, Jackson came through as much more than an entertainer, more like a preacher. He used music and dance to spread messages about love, peace, and caring for the earth. The songs “Earth Song” and “They Don’t Care About Us” and the thoughtful “Man in the Mirror,” amongst others, each hit home about their respective themes.

For MJ fans, this may rare be a rare occasion. As one of teary-eyed dancers said, describing his chance to audition: “This is it.”

Are you a horror film fanatic? You should definitely watch Paranormal Activity online. It is a horror mockumentary (a documentary recording real life but is completely fictional). The story circulates in a middle class couple who moves into what they seem a typical suburban starter tract house, then they begun to be disturbed by the presense of something that may or may not be somehow demonic but is certainly most active in the middle of the night. Oren Peli came to the idea of the film when he started to experience “unnatural things” at home and started to wonder what might happen if he set up cameras and record what will happen as he sleeps at night.

It took a while for Peli to set up his house for the shoot. It took him roughly a year as repaint the walls, add furniture, put in carpets, and going as far as building an actual stairwell. He joked of having a good side effect of the renovation giving him his “dream home with a big TV”. He also studied paranormal phenomena and demonology stating, “ We wanted to be as truthful as we could be”. The main reason for demon as the ghost in the story was because of the outcome of the study pointing to the most malevolent and violent entities being the “demons”. For getting the cast for the movies, Peli auditioned a hundred of people before finally meeting Katie Featherston and actor Micah Sloat. They originally auditioned individually but Peli called them back for an audition together. Peli was so impressed with the chemistry of the two. “If you saw the audition footage, you would’ve thought they had known each other for years” as Peli commented.

In casting the movie, Peli auditioned “a few hundred people” before finally meeting actress Katie Featherston and actor Micah Sloat. He originally auditioned them individually and then called them back so that they could audition together. Peli was impressed with the chemistry the actors showed saying, “If you saw the [audition] footage, you would’ve thought they had known each other for years.”. The new movie Law Abiding Citizen utilizes the talents of two top actors and a director with plenty of top action thriller projects under his belt. Best known for directing The Italian Job, A Man Apart, and Be Cool, F. Gary Gray’s directorial effort Law Abiding Citizen is a serious action crime thriller that shows what a man is capable of when pushed beyond his limits.

The man referred to is a character by the name of Clyde Shelton, played by Gerard Butler, perhaps best known for his role as King Leonidas in 300. Butler was also in The Phantom of the Opera, P.S. I Love You, and The Ugly Truth, and is now working on a movie titled The Bounty with Jennifer Aniston.

On the other side of the legal system in Law Abiding Citizen is Jamie Foxx, Academy and BAFTA Award winner for his portrayal of Ray Charles in the 2004 movie Ray. Foxx has also won a Golden Globe award and has been nominated for several Grammy awards. Fox has also taken other dramatic roles in films such as 1999′s Any Given Sunday, Collateral, Dreamgirls, and The Kingdom.

Law Abiding Citizen is about a man (Clyde Shelton, played by Butler) who takes the law into his own hands after his wife and daughter are murdered and the DA’s office agrees to a plea bargain that lets one of the murders walk while the other gets put on death row. The characters are quite strongly played, as they should be for this kind of movie. There are some nods to complexity in that your conclusion about who the good guy is and who the bad guy is may change during the course of the movie. This is good because it keeps you sitting on the edge of your cinema seat rather than trying to stuff your fist into the cup holder armrest out of sheer boredom.

This is a guy flick: lots of stuff blows up, and there’s a lot of graphic violence. Probably not a good first date movie, however, so all you dudes just watch Law Abiding Citizen on our website.

There are, however, no characters in the movie named after these places. During the filming actress Abigail Breslin, who plays Little Rock, celebrated her 13th birthday and adopted a shelter puppy.

It is important to note that the zombies in Zombieland are not like the undead horror movie fans are used to. Instead, they’re infected and move erratically. They are like the zombies in 2004′s Dawn of the Dead. So watch Zombieland online to enjoy their scariness and general ickiness.

His partner in zombicide is a guy named Columbus, played by Jesse Eisenburg, has a habit of running from everything he’s afraid of, which, in a world taken over by zombies, is pretty much everything.

Tallahassee and Columbus pick up several misfit zombie hunters and kill their way across the land, stopping at an amusement park where they’ll be safe. Or will they?

The zombies in this movie are not the undead, but rather “infected” and as such, they’re a pretty disgusting lot. Watch the Zombieland online to get a taste of this awesome gross-out romp.

Zombieland Review

Zombieland is pretty much exactly what you’d expect it to be from watching the trailer and you can bet you will have a fantastic time when you watch Zombieland. It’s a comedy horror flick that’s heavier on the comedy than the horror. There’s some blood and bile spewing, but not a lot of really scary stuff. The zombies of this movie are not the undead, but are infected with a fever that leads to insanity that eventually leads to a taste for human flesh. The two main defenses that uninfected people have against the zombies is good cardiovascular fitness so they can outrun them and staying away from public restrooms, because zombies like to attack when they know you’re vulnerable.

Wussy Columbus, played by Jesse Eisenberg fights zombies out of a sense of self-preservation. Eventually he meets up with the greatest zombie killer the world has ever known, a man named Tallahassee, played by Woody Harrelson. The only thing Tallahassee likes more than dead zombies is a Twinkie. Because sometimes you just need one.

Perhaps because the two are only concentrating on finding zombies, they stop at a market and meet two sisters played by Emma Stone and Abigail Breslin, who rob them. But a few minutes later they figure they might as well team up with the only two actual humans they’ve encountered in some time.

Everyone’s comic timing is right on the mark, and Harrelson gets to shine as the slightly deranged good old boy he’s so good at playing. Abigail Breslin from Little Miss Sunshine gives an outstanding performance that threatens to outshine even Harrelson. And you’ll get to see a really funny cameo by Bill Murray. What’s not to like?

Here’s the thing: if you go and Watch Zombieland Online expecting a zombie movie like George Romero’s then you’re going to be sorely disappointed. While billed as a “horror/suspense” movie, it has a healthy dose of humor in it, and if that’s what you’re looking for then you’ll really enjoy this movie.

Columbus, as the neurotic recluse who has only recently come out of his home, is prevented from dragging the movie down, partly because he does a terrific job, but also because he has Tallahassee as a counterweight, bringing the movie back to the present when things get a little too contemplative. As the four make their way to a California theme park, Columbus begins to see that his former life of playing everything safe maybe wasn’t such a good life after all.

You should watch Whip It online because it is a coming of age story with a twist. Author Shauna Cross wrote a young adult novel titled Derby Girl, from which she adapted the screenplay for Whip It. Ellen Page stars in this inspiring and funny movie about a roller derby league, in which Drew Barrymore makes her directorial debut.

Barrymore proudly told a recent press conference in Toronto that she chose Page for the part before Page was cast in the 2007 movie Juno. Don’t miss your chance to watch Whip It online, or you’ll miss Barrymore in a supporting role, and Kristin Wiig as Malice in Wonderland, who acts as a mentor to new girl Bliss. Marcia Gay Harden and Daniel Stern play Bliss’ parents: a pageant-loving stage mom and a slightly clueless but ultimately supportive father.

Whip It began filming in the summer of 2008 with location work in various Michigan towns. Part of the movie was filmed in Texas, however. See if you can pick out scenes that were shot in Detroit, Michigan and Austin, Texas when you watch Whip It online. Bliss is a teen whose mother pressures her to be in pageants, which she intensely dislikes. So she joins a roller derby league without her mother’s knowledge.

Directed by Drew Barrymore, the move stars Ellen Page as an unexpected roller derby natural named Bliss Cavendar. In a recent press conference in Toronto, Barrymore pointed out that she had cast Page before she was cast in the 2007 hit Juno.

Marcia Gay Harden plays Bliss’s pageant-loving mother, who is exasperated over Bliss’ lack of enthusiasm for entering beauty pageants, and Daniel Stern, Bliss’ father who is more understanding. Whip It is the new movie directed by Drew Barrymore and starring Ellen Page. Page plays an independent minded teenager named Bliss Cavendar who is unfortunately being raised by a pageant-loving mom played by Marcia Gay Harden. As in the 2007 sleeper hit Juno, Page plays a girl who is, for better or worse, her own person. But other than that, the movies are not at all alike. Barrymore recently said proudly in a press conference that she had chosen Page for the role before Juno was filmed.

Bliss finds a way to sneak out of the house so she can learn to skate and try out for a roller derby league in Austin by telling her mother that she’s taking an SAT preparation class. She not only makes the team, she becomes quite popular in the league, and she meets a boy named Oliver, played by Landon Pigg, who she meets at a game. The other young women on the team become like a family to her, rough edges and all.

Of course her mother finds out what is going on and is quite upset by it. If you no longer wish to wait to see this film, the why not watch Whip It online? But her dad, played by Daniel Stern is more sympathetic. Perhaps the pivotal point in the movie is when he confronts his wife, telling her that he doesn’t want to miss the chance for his daughter to do what makes her happy, since it is clear that Bliss is totally cut out for being a roller derby girl.

Jimmy Fallon plays the emcee at the roller derby league, Andrew Wilson plays the coach named, aptly, “Coach.” And there’s Landon Pigg as Bliss’s boyfriend. All do just fine, particularly Stern, though the boyfriend storyline is one that could have been left out without compromising the rest of the movie.

Anyway, it’s a fun movie and it’s inspiring for girls who don’t fit the traditional girly-girl mold. Perfect of a mom-daughter (or dad-daughter) outing, Whip It reminds its audience that dreams come in many different packages, and even the less conventional ones. Pandorum: Movie Review

Pandorum is the new movie starring Dennis Quaid and Ben Foster as two astronauts who wake up aboard a spacecraft not knowing where they are or why they are there. The think they are alone, but noises drifting up from the spaceship’s underbelly make them rethink that position. Quaid’s character, Lt. Payton outranks Foster’s Cpl Bower, so Bower must venture out into the bowels of the ship to try to figure out where the noises are coming from.

It’s scary.

The screenplay was written by the movie’s director Christian Alvart along with Travis Milloy. British producers Jeremy Bolt and Paul WS Anderson of Impact Pictures, and Robert Kulzer of Germany’s Constantine Film presented Milloy’s original screenplay to Alvart. Alvart received it enthusiastically, noting that it had similarities to a script he was working on. So Alvart and Milloy wrote a new screenplay for a movie that could be classified as a sci-fi horror thriller.

It has been compared with the video game-based Resident Evil (2002), which was a sort of “loved it or hated it” movie. It would appear that Pandorum may be similar in that regard. If you are interested in sci-fi horror, you’ll probably like it, but if you think you’re getting a psychological thriller, you may be disappointed.

As Bower works his way deeper into the guts of the spacecraft, things get weirder and weirder and scarier and scarier. Eventually Bower and Payton discover that they need to save themselves not only because they want to live through it, but they need to save themselves to prevent the human race from being destroyed altogether. Anyway, director Christian Alvart as a boy developed a fascination for movies and television partly as a result of the strict religious (Christian, natch) household in which he grew up. Though he wasn’t allowed to watch films, but he could read all the novels or other source materials for films that he could get his hands on. He is known for having at least one shot in every one of his movies (which include Antibodies and The Zero) where a major character is reflected by three mirrors, showing him from every angle four times.

Surrogates is the new movie co-directed by Bruce Willis and Jonathan Mostow and starring Willis as an FBI agent. In the futuristic world of the movie, nobody leaves their homes anymore. They simply recline in their “stem chair” and plug into a world in which personally designed avatars interact with each other on behalf of the human race. It’s sort-of a case of the entire human race opting into a Matrix type setup where their surrogates make all the decisions, perform all the actions, and take all the consequences.

Except for one case.

The human who invented the surrogates is found murdered. Which is odd because there’s not supposed to be any crime in a world where humans remain happily in their homes all the time and let their surrogates duke it out. It also might lead you to ask yourself why they even need an FBI in a world in which there isn’t any crime.

Willis’ character is an agent named Greer, and Rosamund Pike plays his way-too-hot-for-the-likes-of-Bruce-Willis wife Maggie. Radha Mitchell plays Greer’s FBI partner, Agent Peters. Before going, you should ask yourself if you’re up for 88 minutes of what some have called a cross between The Island and I Robot, with a dash of The Matrix thrown in? It will probably come down to whether you’re a Bruce Willis fan or not.

Or if you’re big on the movies where a Utopian world proves to be only a veneer over something twisted and wrong. One redeeming quality of the movie is that the story, which comes from a 2005-2006 comic book series also titled Surrogate, is something that is not that hard to imagine. How many of us hide behind an internet connection, interacting all day with people we’ll never meet? How many of us will simply cut off an online relationship if it sours, minimizing the psychic pain that would result from living out a real person to person relationship?

Which is not to say there is anything wrong with having online friendships and working partnerships. Only when it becomes a substitute for everything else does it become shallow and unsatisfying. It doesn’t seem that much of a stretch to the imagination to envision taking the online role playing games a couple of steps further and having them acted out in the physical world between machines that we’ve designated to represent us.

Kids who grew up in the 1980s probably read the book Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs or had it read to them. The story is about a town where precipitation fell in the form of food, including juice, ice cream, and of course, meatballs.

Those who loved the book as kids will want to watch Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs online and they don’t have to be accompanied by a kid to enjoy it. We won’t tell. Though the movie doesn’t completely stick with the story from the book, the premise and the moral of the story are similar.

The story is a demonstration of the aphorism “Be careful what you ask for, because you might just get it.” In the book, the town of Chewandswallow is the subject of a reminiscence of Grandpa Henry who relates to his two grandchildren about the place where weather happens at breakfast, lunch, and dinner times and consists of food and beverages. Rain could be anything from soup to juice, while snow is mashed potatoes. Storms may blow in hamburgers, and tornadoes might be made of tomato sauce. Instead of being closed by a snow day, the school in Chewandswallow must close after being covered by a giant pancake. Eventually townspeople have to build boats out of giant pieces of bread to escape to a place where people buy food in stores.

While some liberties were taken with aspects of the book, the chance to watch Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs online would be a welcome treat for elementary school age children, their parents, and their teachers. The animated film is a satirical take on disaster movies like Armageddon, while at the same time being a classic children’s tale. Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs is an end-of-summer computer animated 3D movie from Sony Pictures Animation that delivers a jolly good time. It is intelligent enough that parents “get” it and colorful and beautiful enough that their kids love it. Old school animation seems to have been all but abandoned with the long climb of success experienced by computer generated animation that started in 1992 with Pixar’s Toy Story.

Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs is based on a 1982 children’s book written by Judi Barrett and illustrated by Ron Barrett in which a grandfather reminisces about a town called Chewandswallow where precipitation comes in the form of food. The movie makes a bit of a departure from the book, but the inherent sweetness and eccentric humor remain intact.

This newest computer-animated movie is voiced by several recognizeable actors including Mr. T., Neil Patrick Harris, and Bill Hader as the protagonist Flint Lockwood. The movie has a happy eccentricity that works well with the surrealist settings in which it takes place. Lockwood is a lovable weirdo who invents a machine to turn water into food and only realizes that it works after it is launched into the sky and mixes with weather patterns, causing food to fall from the sky instead of rain. Instead of snow, the population of Swallow Falls gets ice cream. Mmmm…

But then, the people start to realize that they have too much of a good thing and that the food-weather will end in disaster unless Something Is Done. The 3D animation is awesome in scenes like the spaghetti twister, and kids will love it. In fact, the animation is the movie’s most wonderful characteristic, and that’s saying rather a lot considering the story, voices, and concept design are quite excellent as well.

At the beginning of the film, Jennifer is your typical cheerleader, popular with both the boys and girls at the high school, for obvious reasons. The inevitable high school rock band, fronted by Nickolai (Adam Brody), tries to make a deal with the Devil in exchange for a recording contract. Jennifer ends up involved with the ritual. Something goes horribly wrong and Jennifer is possessed by a demon who sends her off on a killing rampage to devour the souls of her male school pals. The way the demon uses Jennifer’s body is, not surprisingly, to seduce the boys one at a time and draining off their sexual life force, killing them in the process.

Anita becomes an unwitting avenging angel, bent on stopping Jennifer’s predatory behavior and saving the unlucky boys in her power.

Jennifer’s Body Review

On paper the movie Jennifer’s Body looks like it has it all: a script by more-hip-than-thou Diablo Cody, a star who turns grown men into babbling idiots, and a director whose promising debut won the Director’s Award at Sundance in 2000. But the movie is a little like making dinner from bratwurst and ice cream and guacamole: on their own they can be awesome, but together they’re not all that appetizing.

A number of reviews – some leaning positive and some leaning negative – have raised the issue of “What exactly is this movie about?” Is it about two best friends who’ll do most anything for each other? Is it about a teenage man-eater who turns into a literal man-eater? Is it about the ultimate outcome of any “sexually powerful teenage girl” fantasy carried to its extreme?

Cody brings her trademark clever, if unrealistic dialogue, her jabs at pop cultural poseurs, and plenty of suggestion of carnality to this movie without really delivering any substance. And it isn’t quite enough to hold the film together as either a dark comedy or as a horror film. It’s not funny enough for the former, and not scary enough for the latter.

The lead role of Jennifer is the perfect role for actress Megan Fox: she’s hot, she knows it, and she’ll wield it to her advantage to get away with as much as possible for as long as possible. Amanda Seyfried, as Jennifer’s best friend, does her part well considering the material she had to work with. But putting a pair of glasses on a blonde beauty like Seyfried doesn’t render her nerdy or unattractive, even standing next to Fox.

Karyn Kusama, the gifted director of 2000′s Girlfight, also tries hard, but the movie’s ambivalence over whether it’s a horror movie or a dark comedy was apparently too much for even a very talented director to overcome. The overall impression is that each of the three legs holding up this cinematic table (writer, director, lead) perhaps thought that the other two would be enough to overcome each one’s particular weaknesses.

Will all three be forgiven and move forward from here with their careers intact? Of course. Plenty of award winning writers and directors have an occasional blemish on their resume, and there are plenty of men young and old who will sit through anything as long as they get to ogle Megan Fox.

Will the writer, director, and lead actress learn from the shortcomings of this movie? Does it matter? Fans of Cody and Fox will no doubt await with bated breath whatever comes next in their careers.

When you watch Jennifer’s Body online, you’ll see the culmination of the work of a suddenly successful screenwriter, a suddenly successful lead actress, and a talented director who can’t quite make it work. Screenwriter Diablo Cody became famous for, and won an Academy Award for the 2007 movie Juno, a fresh, original take on the teen-unexpectedly-gets-pregnant plotline. Rather than make her lead character a vulnerable lass in need of rescuing, she gave Juno a whip-smart mind and mouth and did a good job of blowing a lot of teen and movie stereotypes out of the water.

Taking its title from a 1994 song by Hole, Jennifer’s Body concerns an alpha cheerleader who goes from being a figurative man-eater to being a literal man-eater. If you watch Jennifer’s Body online, you’ll be treated to lots of blood, the vomiting of black bile, Jennifer and her best friend Anita (“Needy”) making out for no apparent reason other than to get the guys turned on, and a Satan-worshiping indie rock band. There are a lot of good ingredients, but it isn’t the tastiest mash-up on the menu. The movie itself, like a teen girl, can’t decide on its identity: a dark, campy comedy, or a horror movie.

Perhaps the one thread that holds things together for the most part is the storyline of Jennifer’s friend “Needy” Anita. She is thoroughly loyal to her BFF and takes on the task of trying to stop her once she turns into a bloodthirsty demon who eats high school boys alive. You know, typical best friend stuff.

Once you can watch Jennifer’s Body online, you’ll be seeing the results of almost three years of moviemaking. The filming schedule was pushed back due to the strike by the Writers Guild of America. It was mostly filmed in Burnaby, British Columbia, though several of the school scenes were shot at various schools in Vancouver. The soundtrack to the movie, featuring tracks by Cobra Starship, Hayley Williams, and Panic at the Disco, is destined to make it onto millions of teenagers’ iPods.

Anita (nicknamed “Needy”) could only be considered nerdy in a movie like this. In other words, the glasses they make her wear to induce nerdiness fail to detract from the fact that Amanda Seyfried, who plays her, is a very pretty young lady.

But no matter: Jennifer’s Body has all the elements that attract the young people that movie studios covet most. There are gruesome slayings, sex, cheerleaders, a rock band, and a lesbian kiss. And all of this takes place in the hyper-dramatic little universe that is the modern high school.

You probably have three very important questions about the new movie, Sorority Row. Before you check it out online or in the theaters, let’s address these questions. First, did Audrina Partridge make a successful leap to feature films from reality TV? Did the set see lots of backstabbing and bad attitudes between the actresses? And who did the nude scenes?

Audrina Partridge doesn’t get much screen time at all, as she’s the character who is murdered by the prank that goes wrong early in the film. She compared it to Drew Barrymore’s small role in the first Scream movie. She also told the website, Horror Hacker, that all of the girls in Sorority Row got along well with each other, going out with each other for pedicures, as well as fun times with pillow fights while they were in their underwear. This is much different than in The Hills, where the girls in the show fought constantly. Exactly what you expected.

When interviewed, actress Rumer Willis also said that the set didn’t see any ‘bitchiness’, because none of the actresses really had too many female friends on a regular basis. So, it seems that if you assemble a group of young ladies who don’t really like young ladies as friends, they’ll inevitably love each other and instantly bond. Something akin to: the enemy of my enemy is my friend, or something along those lines.

If you want to know the person that gets unclothed in the movie, I can say right now that it is not any of the sorority sisters, even though there is a part that touches on the subject in which they are involved. The people that are naked, are people that are extras, which are especially hired because of their stunning bodies, as a kind of sop to Cerberus. If you choose to view Sorority Row online, you will be able to watch any scenes you want, and replay the ones that you like the greatest.

The nudity is explained by actress Jamie Chung, who makes a comparison to the film ‘Monster’s Ball’, which won Halle Berry a Best Actress Oscar. “…like the scene from Monster’s Ball or Monster that requires nudity but really, oh God, it’s just open and raw and it’s appropriate for that character and tells a story, then absolutely. But if it doesn’t call for it…” This should clear up any questions you have!

Sorority Row is a remake of a 1983 movie titled The House on Sorority Row and is scheduled for release in the UK on 9 September, and in the US on 11 September. The one-sentence summary of the plot is that a bunch of sorority sisters try to cover up the death of one of their sorority sisters after a prank goes horribly awry, and then they find out they’re being stalked by a serial killer. It is a slasher film featuring six sorority sisters (say that after a couple of beers!). Characters and the actors playing them are as follows: Jessica (Leah Pipes), Cassidy (Briana Evigan), Ellie (Rumer Willis), Claire (Jamie Chung), Chugs (Margo Harshman), and Megan (Audrina Partridge).

The rest of the cast includes Carrie Fisher as Mrs. Crenshaw, Julian Morris as Andy, Caroline D’Amore as Maggie, Matt Lanter as Kyle, Matt O’Leary as Garrett, and Maxx Hennard as Mickey.

Is it worth it to watch Sorority Row online? Well, probably, depending on your level of aversion to movie ticket prices.

In the movie, the six sorority sisters are busy living their perfect upper-middle class lives in a perfect college sorority. But then Megan finds out that her boyfriend (Garrett, played by Matt O’Leary) is cheating on her! So the sisters come up with a prank where they fake Megan’s death while she’s making out with Garrett, as a sort of payback. As part of the prank, they all take Megan’s “corpse” to dispose of it at a steel mill. They tell Garrett that they need something they can chop the corpse up with. But then they make the fatal mistake of turning their backs on Garrett. While their backs are turned, Garrett thinks he sees Megan’s dead body move and shish kebabs her with a tire tool. This actually does kill her.

So now that they really do have a body to get rid of, they decide to put it in a well and never speak of it again. But you knew it couldn’t end there. Let’s just say that a few months later there’s a mysterious hooded figure, and sorority sisters are killed one by one … If you watch Sorority Row online, maybe you should leave the lights on, mmmm-kay?

So, yeah. Go watch Sorority Row trailer online and it’ll be awesome because you’ll get to see that girl from The Hills, and Demi Moore’s daughter who is close to the age her mum was when she made the 1985 chronically overblown melodrama St. Elmo’s Fire. Only in this movie there’s a crime involving a lug wrench and a crazed serial killer with a taste for fresh sorority meat.

Sorority Row The Movie Review

OK, so this may sound schizophrenic, but whether the movie Sorority Row is awesome or crap depends on whether you like 80s-style slasher movies with lots of blood, violence and nudity.

On the one hand, Summit Entertainment earns back any cred it lost with its Twilight series of movies. Sorority Row has plenty of gruesome deaths and a rather sick sense of humour.

On the other hand, it’s a bunch of cheap thrills and campy excess that’s thin on plot.

On the one hand, you have the conflict of some sisters wanting to confess when a prank goes horribly awry, while others want to hide the body and a couple of them just kinda go along with whatever happens.

On the other hand, it’s a bunch of spoiled, pretty girls who don’t have much better to do than drink and party and taunt horny frat boys.

The point is, if you go into it knowing it’s a campy, bloody festival of excess with a mini-skirt and platform shoes dress code, you’re probably going to love this movie. But if you are expecting an intelligent, psychologically wrenching slasher film with a moral, then forget it.

Here are the two characters that make the film.

Jessica, played by Leah Pipes, is nothing if not practical. She’s ready to marry a senator’s son and when it comes to choosing whether to hide the body or ‘fess up, she very honestly tells the other sisters that she would rather not spend her “childbearing years in lock-up.” She’s just bitchy enough to own the movie, but not so bitchy you want her to die.

Carrie Fisher – yup, they let a woman over 22 into an American movie about a sorority, and she’s not the typical old battleaxe house mother the size of a refrigerator – plays Mrs. Crenshaw, and it turns out that her part is actually important to the film. Let’s just say she’s come a long way from Princess Leia in a bikini top.

The point is, know what you’re getting into before you go (minus spoilers, of course). It’s somewhat mindless, random slashy stuff like the 80s were so good at churning out, only with better hair.

It is a great idea to watch the 1982 cult classic John Carpenter’s The Thing, prior to viewing the movie Whiteout, since the Thing has grown an enormous following, even though it did awful at the box office. There is another little classic film you may have heard of, E.T. the Extraterrestrial. as E.T. The Extraterrestrial opened that same weekend. The reason you should watch The Thing is that is features a similar Antarctic research compound setting as Whiteout, though The Thing is more of a gross-out sci-fi movie. This distinction in tone and atmosphere from The Thing has been reiterated by Dominic Sena, the director of Whiteout.

Let’s talk more about the film. If you have a monitor that if fair sized, and you choose to watch the movie online, everything should be great. Whiteout is actually based on a Greg Rucka’s graphic novel of the same name rather than John Carpenter’s The Thing, the graphic novel being illustrated by Steve Lieber. The majority of the fans where thrilled that the graphic novel was being turned into a movie. The black and white visuals of the graphic novel fit the Antarctic atmosphere well. There is a sequel to the graphic novel available now called Whiteout: Melt. This new entry seems tailor-made for film adaptation, as it seems to be presented like a storyboard and less like a traditional comic book. Whiteout: Melt has a storyline that contains political intrigue, nuclear weapon theft, and more thrills. In a few years, you may be able to watch Whiteout online along with any sequels it may have.

Northern Manitoba was where most of the film was shot, though it was later moved to a sound stage in Montreal. Through the use of special effects, Manitoba appeared even more chaotic than in reality. The crew and cast of the movie were taught in every way that one could die in the extremely frigid environment, even ways that seemed harmless, like not changing out of clothes made for harsh weather, facing the wind while breathing, or consuming alcohol. Was it worth it all in the end? We’ll see. The initial reviews have been lukewarm; however, box office numbers can many times completely defy the reviews. Whiteout is set to open September 9th.

Movie Review – Whiteout

The new Antarctic murder mystery thriller called Whiteout is set to be released 10 September in the UK. Set at one of the research stations on Antarctica, Whiteout is about lots of things: mysterious things buried under the ice, murder, a U.S. marshal hoping to escape the rest of the world by moving to Antarctica, and the approach of the Antarctic winter, during which the sun sets for six months.

The movie is based on a graphic novel, also titled Whiteout, which concerns U.S. Marshal Carrie Stetko and U.N. agent Lily Sharp and the pursuit of a murderer at the coldest place on earth with a three-day deadline before winter closes in for six months. A body is discovered miles away from the base where Carrie and the other residents live. There is no map, tracks, nothing to give any clues as to what happened.

Though it sounds like the setup for a classic crime thriller, the plot is mostly, well, “plotty,” methodically moving from one point to the next, with the turns and twists packing little in the way of surprise. Perhaps it is because of the setting, but there’s not a lot of excitement in the pursuit of the murderer.

Beckinsale seems to phone it in for this movie, as a rather stock character who has flashbacks to the traumatic events that sent her to Antarctica in the first place, and who becomes involved in a “will they or won’t they” romantic entanglement. But the team of four screenwriters populated the cast with inadequately developed major characters played by Tom Skerritt (Dr. John Fury) and Gabriel Macht (U.N. agent Robert Pryce, who takes the place of the novel’s Lily Sharpe), neither of whom breathes too much life into the characters.

The director Dominic Sena directed Swordfish a few years ago, and that seems to explain a lot of the lameness in this movie’s execution. But then again, Sena directed Kalifornia, which was a good movie.

The film does a decent job with a scene that takes place during a blizzard in which the snow is falling fast and thick enough that everyone looks identical and it’s really hard to tell what’s going on. The viewer can feel the frustration, helplessness and hopelessness of the characters easily. While not aggressively bad, the movie is a disappointing adaptation of a decent work of fiction that could have been much better.

The ice drilling has gone deep enough to suggest that whatever was drilled for is valuable enough to kill someone for. So with Whiteout, you have brutal murder + 6 months of winter darkness + Kate Beckinsale chasing a murderer, and the sum of those parts adds up to what looks to be an exciting new thriller.

Whiteout is about a U.S. deputy marshal named Carrie Stetko (Beckinsale), who is assigned to Antarctica and has to investigate a murder there. She is restrained by time due to the impending start of an Antarctic winter, in which the sun sets for six months. Also investigating the murder is a U.N. operative named Robert Pryce, played by Gabriel Macht. Other cast members include Alex O’Loughlin as an overconfident pilot named Russell Haden and Columbus Short as Delfy, a novice pilot who helps Stetko in her investigation.

Early in the plot development, Stetko is attacked by the murderer she is looking for and left for dead. She manages to save herself, but she loses two fingers from frostbite. As the sole law enforcement in Antarctica, she is assigned to investigate Antarctica’s first murder. Her investigation reveals secrets buried under the Antarctic ice that someone believes to be important enough to kill for. Stetko has to find the killer before he finds her and kills her.

As for the graphic novel that spawned the screenplay of Whiteout, its protagonists are Carrie Stetko and in the book Stetko plays opposite U.N. agent Lily Sharpe. Apparently the movie studios were wary of having a feature movie with two female leads, and so they reassigned the gender of the U.N. agent. Anyway, Stetko has moved to The Ice as a way to get away from a troubled past, but then there is a murder there. The murderer could be one of five men on Antarctica. Furthermore, the murderer takes ice samples from the area around where the body is found. The book and movie explore what could make ice samples important enough to cause someone to commit murder? Well, watch Whiteout online and you’ll find out all about it.

You could also consider reading the graphic novel the movie is based on. At only 128 pages long, it shouldn’t be too tough a read.
